Women have been determined in many fields, including education, career, family, social justice—and certainly, in the field of love. But even as a woman may seem to achieve what she’s been going for, she can feel deeply unsure of herself and what she’s after, and not understand why.

As consultant Carol Driscoll, and associates Meryl Nietsch-Cooperman and I will show, Aesthetic Realism explains that there’s an ethical and aesthetic criterion for good determination: As we’re determined to achieve something, do we want to be fair to the world and other people, OR are we stubbornly insistent on having what we see as our way, intent on annihilating anything that seems to question us?

You’ll learn about the fight between these two kinds of determination through instances from the speakers’ lives and the lives of women in history and literature.
